Rita - Bearing Down

Filed under: Ship's Log — Captain Ned Small @ 4:47 pm

The fishing has been great if you can catch the good weather between hurricanes. Today, after a great weekend of flats fishing, we have Rita bearing down on us. Once again it will be a few days before things settle down. We’ve been catching lots of snook in the twenty to twenty four inch class, a few big ones, and the red’s are plentiful. It’s looking good for the redfish in the coming season. Tom Holt and Noble Bielby had the foredeck this weekend fishing topwater plugs on light spinning tackle. We lost count of the numbers of snook, red’s and baby tarpon we caught for a Grand Slam Weekend. Early teal season opens this week and we’ve been scouting the ‘Glades by canoe and rigging up for the opener. I’ve been over to Biscayne Bay scouting for bonefish and I’m finding numerous schools of giant fish, tailing, cruising, big fish, lots of ten pounders and bigger ones are not uncommon. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re interested, and have the right masochistic tendencies, when the weather is favorable, I’ll be taking a few trips over there to pursue the Gray Ghost. Fly fishing only. I’ll be in Montana from October 11 until October 17.
