Slow rollers at dawn,
We creep toward them, tense, sneaking,
Into their bedroom

Waves lap untrod beaches,
While we wait for Gulf cruisers,
High and happy, northbound

Line vaults from the deck,
Roostertailing toward the Gulf,
Burned fingers, broad smiles

A woodpecker knocks
All eyes strain at the shadows
Which end is the head?

The Milky Way watches
The James Bond ride before dawn
First on point, fish rolls!

Low low tide at dawn
Clear of the Zone, now let’s fly!
CRUNCH – like a googan

At Boundary Bay
A tarpon leaps clear outstretched
Just taking a look

Cast to the shadow
Tease it like its a kitten
Flare, suction -he’s on!

Shimmering silver
Explodes in the still water
Gills flared, head shaking

Mysterious still
Elusive shiny silver
Gills in the mangroves

Long large bright silver
Shimmering and montionless
On the mangrove edge

Bursting forth from the

Vanishes ‘neath my fly.

Headlights on gravel,
Grimm’s crab pots, bamboo,
Portend adventure.

Wing tips slice water,
With white stars on your black back,
Who’d guess you can fly?
